"This painting was created by my mother in 1966 when she was 50 yeas old. It was one of only two paintings that she did. It is signed JWC, her initials for Janet Wolfeld Cantow. It is a painting of the African American woman who worked as a maid for our family and was a family friend for many decades including when she returned from retirement in Columbus, Georgia to attend my sister's memorial in 1982.

"I always loved this painting for many reasons: It features a very dignified interpretation of Mattie, a woman I loved dearly from the time I was 4 years old and it is inventive in its execution with Mattie's photo pasted into the actual painting. I was also taken with the way my mother executed the sense of a checkered floor and striped wall, neither of which actually existed. All her life my mother was considered to be an eccentric and creative person who was also admired for being outspoken. I believe that her creative endeavors which included making hats was a primary source of my own creative inclinations. This painting is one of my most treasured inheritances and now I am delighted to share it in print form with the world."

"This original art was done as Acrylic on Masonite with and actual photograph affixed to the painting."
